Narrative

Following Eliza's death in 1854, Nicholas took his household goods and with his two small children "came east again" to his home town of Martindale. Four years later, July 3, 1858, he married Loxea Bushnell Ford, the daughter of John Bushnell and Loxea Lay, born January 5, 1821. She was a widow with five children: Elisha, Mary, Caroline, Ruth, and Julia. She had previously been married in 1847, at Mellenville Reformed Church, to David Ford. The marriage of Nicolas and Loxea was conducted in the parsonage at Martindale by the Reverend Kent, with Martin Ham, a brother of his first wife was a witness. They lived at first at Hillsdale, Columbia County. Mrs. Ford's brother, then living in Fulton County, induced them to move there and they purchased a farm at Northampton betweem 1860 and 1870 and there raised a family of four sons. Both he and his wife lived to good old ages, he being over ninety when he died and she eighty-seven. She died January 11, 1908, and was buried beside her son in Mayfield, New York. Nicholas died November 29, 1908, and was buried at Mellinville.
