Narrative
He was a Lutheran Minister at High Point, North Carolina. In the early 1930's Earnest served as First Vice President of the Shufelt Family Association. The Shufelt Family Association was formed in 1929 and held it's first reunion August 3 of that year. The association and the reunions continued until at least August 31, 1935, and probably for some time thereafter. The results of the Association, the family history, "Our Folks," was printed in about 1936. The book has served as a tremendous resource for this compilation and I am forever grateful to all the members of the Association. The minutes of the Association's reunions may be found in an appendices of the publication. Earnest Joseph married, June 28, 1918, Carrie Maude Hutton of Charleston, New York, and they had four children, the first born in New York and the remaining three in North Carolina.
As the below quoted cunsus record indicates, Ernest (Joseph) and Carrie married about 1918 (I have June 28, 1918) when Ernest (Joseph) was 30 and Carrie was 22. As you can see, "Robert" was born in NC and both parents were born in NY, as was his younger brother. His older brother was born in NY. This indicates that Joseph and Carrie moved to NC between about 1921 and 1924. As a pastor I doubt that Ernest (Joseph) would have lied to the census taker.
