Narrative
Jeremias SHUFELT, the son of Johannes Shufelt and Catharina Pulver was born July 19, 1767, and baptized at St. Paul's (Zion's) Lutheran Church, Red Hook, August 23, 1767. The baptismal record lists the parents as "Johannes Zufeld and Catharina Pulver" Sponsers at the baptism were "Georg Adam Zufeld and wife, Catharina Reisdorf." On May 11, 1794, at the Reformed Church of Claverack, he married Hannah Herder (Anatje Herder) of Ghent or Chatham, probably the daughter of Petrus Herder and Margretha Everts, born January, 23, 1773. They settled on a farm about one mile west of Craryville, then called Bains Corners. After giving birth to twelve children, Hannah died March 29, 1843, and she is buried in Niver's Cemetery, Craryville, New York. Nearly five years later Jeremiah died, February 17, 1848, and he is buried at her side. All but two of their children grew into adulthood. The two were both named Catherine and each died in infancy.
On Jeremiah's tombstone is this inscription:
Here rest in sweet repose
Until the Lord shall come
Then rise and soar with liim
To thine eternal home.
On Hannah's tombstone is this inscription:
My weeping friends remember me
And you my children dear
Live near to God that when you die
You may with Christ appear.
